Question: "Your Eminence, Sheikh, does placing a tree or a branch of a tree on a grave reduce the punishment, as the Prophet ﷺ did? Or was this specific to him ﷺ only? Please clarify this for us, Your Eminence."
Shaykh Ibn Baaz:
Placing palm branches on graves is not prescribed; rather, it is an innovation (bid'ah). The Prophet ﷺ only did this in the case of two specific graves. He was informed about their punishment, so he placed two palm branches on them. However, he did not place branches on the graves of the people of al-Baqi' or on any other graves. This indicates that the act of placing branches was specific to the two graves for which Allah had revealed to him their punishment. If it had been a general sunnah, he ﷺ would have done it for all graves. Yes.
