Question:
“I was a disbeliever, and I have supplicated to Allāh for years, asking Him for relief and to remove calamities. I have made supplications in every possible way, but Allāh has not answered my prayers. What is the reason for this? This causes me great sadness, and I cannot bear it. I have even thought about suicide...”
Shaykh ʿArafāt ibn Ḥasan:
The fact that you are thinking about suicide is a major mistake!! And a severe sin that you could fall into! Be extremely cautious of this! You might think that you will end what you are feeling or what is causing you pain, but you will leave this world and possibly enter Hellfire due to your suicide and killing yourself. For killing a soul is the greatest sin after shirk (idolatry)! Allāh says: “And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein; and the Wrath and the Curse of Allâh are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him.” (Qur'an 4:93)
So, look at this threat. Is this something good for you? Or is it better to remain in the act of worship you are engaged in, which is making du‘ā' (supplication)? Making du‘ā' is an act of worship. However, the fact that Allāh ﷻ has not answered your supplication could be due to certain obstacles that prevent its acceptance. One of these obstacles is consuming forbidden things, as mentioned in the ḥadīth. The Prophet ﷺ informed us that when a servant makes a supplication that contains no sin or severing of family ties, Allāh either answers his supplication quickly (in this world) or stores it for him in the Hereafter.
It could be that Allāh has repelled some evil from you without your knowledge, or there may be a barrier preventing the acceptance of your supplication, such as consuming forbidden things. Allāh does not answer the supplications of someone who eats or drinks forbidden things. Furthermore, you must not be hasty by saying: “I have made du‘ā' and du‘ā', but it has not been answered.” The Prophet ﷺ forbade this and commanded patience in making du‘ā'. For you are in goodness and doing good. One of these good things is that you are engaged in worship, for making du‘ā' is worship. Allāh says: “And your Lord said: Call upon Me, and I will respond to you.” (Qur'an 40:60) However, as I mentioned earlier, there may be reasons that hinder the acceptance of your du‘ā', or perhaps Allāh has averted harm from you without your knowledge, thanks to your supplication.
It is also possible that a person makes du‘ā' while being heedless and distracted, not being conscious of their du‘ā'. The heedlessness of the heart can also be a reason for the du‘ā' not being accepted. It may also be that a person is distant from their Lord and falls into shirk—may Allāh protect us from that—and this is very dangerous!
Therefore, we advise you to seek knowledge, learn the Sunnah and the good, and to be with the pious and knowledgeable people and to learn from them. So now we know that there can be certain obstacles, so beware of these obstacles. And do everything that is recommended when making du‘ā', such as praising Allāh, sending blessings upon the Prophet, facing the Qiblah, performing wudū' before that, and repeatedly and insistently calling upon Allāh ﷻ for your needs.
The last thing: Do not be hasty. Do not be hasty in your du‘ā', meaning that you want Allāh to quickly fulfill your wish. Do not be hasty in this regard. This is why the Prophet ﷺ said: “The du‘ā' of one of you will be answered as long as he is not hasty and says, ‘I made du‘ā' and made du‘ā', but it was not answered.’”
And this is what you mentioned in your question—that you made du‘ā' and du‘ā', but it was not answered. The Prophet ﷺ told us that if a persons du‘ā' is not answered (in this life), Allāh ﷻ will give him something better on the Day of Judgment. Perhaps you will come on the Day of Judgment with mountains of rewards because of the supplications that Allāh did not answer in this life, but He stored for you in the Hereafter.
And be extremely cautious of ever thinking again about that satanic matter you mentioned, namely suicide! Be very cautious because this is a very dangerous matter! Suicide is one of the major sins! Killing a soul is forbidden, and there is much evidence for this. And as we mentioned, it is one of the major sins after shirk. Allāh says: “And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allāh is Most Merciful to you. And whoever commits that through aggression and injustice, We shall cast him into the Fire, and that is easy for Allāh.” (Qur'an 4:29-30)
On the Day of Judgment, the one who committed suicide will continuously kill themselves in Hell with the same means by which they took their own life. This is one of the most horrendous major sins.
