Al-ʿAllāmah Ḥammūd al-Tuwayjirī [d. 1413 AH] said:
One of the representative duʿāt (callers) in Layth wrote a treatise by hand and sent it to me in Madīnah.
He said in this treatise: ‘The Jamāʿah al-Tablīgh learn this dīn upon the way of Ṣūfiyyah.’
He said: ‘Their creed is just another from the creeds of the Ṣūfiyyah. They interpret (There is nothing worshipped in truth except Allāh) to mean tawḥiḍ al-rubūbiyyah [i.e. there is no Creator, Sustainer, or Controller of Affairs except for Allāh]. They also falsely accuse the ṣaḥābah of being unaware of tawḥīd.’
Then he said: ‘I entered upon a tablīghī teacher in a sixth grade primary school class while he was teaching the subject of having love for the khulafāʾ of the Messenger [ﷺ]. When he came to the subject of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allāh be pleased with him) he said: ‘When plague and drought beset [the people] during the time of ʿUmar [may Allāh be pleased with him], he wrote to one of his regional commanders requesting him to attempt to stretch provisions. This tablīghī teacher then said: ‘Truly, ʿUmar faced trials in his dīn due to his attachment to causality [rather than Allāh].’
The writer of the treatise then said: ‘Thus, this man in his story has falsely accused ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb [may Allāh be pleased with him] of lacking knowledge of tawḥīd. This [claim] is objectionable; for ʿUmar [may Allāh be pleased with him] was more knowledgeable than us concerning tawḥīd and we should learn about tawḥīd from him. This tablīghī wanted to highlight from his story that execution due to a cause or reason is not from this dīn! [Such a claim] hovers close to the ideology of Ṣūfiyyah: wherein they put their trust in [claimed] miracles and hidden teachings.’
He said: ‘It has been related to me by someone whose speech I trust that this same man said to his students: ‘If something should befall one of you from a fire or drowning, do not scream or call anyone! Calling anyone in that situation is shirk!’ He attempts to negate the execution of any means or reason with his words. He also said to his students: ‘Be from among the awliyāʾ, be successful [in your exams] without any revision.’ He also said: ‘Go to the graves and remember your death, and then pray towards those graves.’
