Lowering the Gaze: A Gateway to True Knowledge

Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:

"Lowering the gaze is one of the means of attaining the provision of knowledge."

[Al-Fatawa, Vol. 21, Pg. 257]

SubḥānAllāh! How often do we crave knowledge, understanding, and spiritual clarity, yet we neglect the very key that unlocks it — guarding our eyes from ḥarām?

Every glance at something forbidden doesn’t just tarnish the heart — it veils the light of knowledge. The gaze plants the seed of desire. So how can divine knowledge grow in a heart filled with desires?

Lowering the gaze isn’t just an act of modesty — it’s a purifier of the soul and a magnet for barakah in knowledge, ʿilm, and understanding of dīn. Imam Ash-Shāfiʿī complained to Wakīʿ about a weak memory, and he was advised to leave sins — one of the greatest being the unguarded eye.

Let’s take this advice seriously and teach it to our youth. We live in a time where eyes are constantly tested — on streets, screens, and even scrolls. But those who fight their desires for the sake of Allah are honored by Him in return.

May Allah make us among those whose hearts are illuminated with ʿilm, purified by ḥayāʾ, and protected from fitnah. Ameen.
