The Forgotten Obligation: A Heartfelt Call to Enjoin Good and Forbid Evil

The Forgotten Obligation: A Heartfelt Call to Enjoin Good and Forbid Evil

Question to Shaykh Ibn Baaz:

Many students of knowledge who attend lessons and lectures, and even crowd around scholars in gatherings, do not enjoin good nor forbid evil. We hope for a word of guidance from your Eminence on this matter.

Shaykh Ibn Baaz Answer:

It is an obligation on everyone to enjoin good and forbid evil according to their ability.

If a sufficient number of people take up this responsibility, then the duty falls from the rest.

But if everyone neglects it, then all will be sinful.

Every individual must do their best.

If someone is in a place where no one else is enjoining good or forbidding evil, then it becomes obligatory upon him to stand up and carry this duty — based on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ:

"Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand;
if he is not able, then with his tongue;
if he is not able, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith."
(Narrated by Imām Muslim in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

Thus, it is mandatory upon Muslims to support one another in this noble work, and to advise one another — wherever they may be:

  • in the mosque,

  • on the road,

  • at home with their families,

  • and in all other situations.

Allah the Most High said:

"O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire..."
(Surah al-Taḥrīm, 66:6)

Therefore, the duty in such matters is to cooperate upon righteousness, and to patiently persevere in this noble task.
